Today, we’re thrilled to present our first in-depth look at the brand new Kawai CN201. The CN201 replaces the award-winning CN29 and has some seriously big shoes to fill. We’re excited to do a deep dive here. Background Anyone familiar with our channel knows we are huge fans of the Kawai CN series over here at Merriam Pianos. The CN2* series has had many iterations over the past 15-plus years, with the CN29 being the most recent model. The CN29’s production run was cut short due to a number of factors, chiefly because the Japanese audio company that supplied the chips and much of the sound processing, Onkyo, went out of business. Kawai has sourced a different company for the chips and sound processing on the new CN201, though the identity of this company has not been released publicly. That said, they’ve obviously gone with a major player as the signal processing is noticeably better than what the CN29 was producing. What the CN201 Has to Offer As a whole, the CN201 fills the same lane as the CN29 by delivering a great option for folks who might be considering a used acoustic piano, but would benefit from the convenience and consistency of a good digital piano. And it delivers a ton for the price point, including individual 88 key sampling, 3 high-quality acoustic piano patches, a great action, a high-quality speaker system and lots of modern technology. Piano Sound The CN201 is loaded up with three 88-key individually sampled patches - the SKEX, Kawai EX and K-60 upright piano, courtesy of the Progressive Harmonic Imaging (PHI) sound engine. We’re thrilled Kawai has included a high-quality upright piano patch here since that particular sound is perfect for lots of types of music. Kawai’s Virtual Technician of course, makes a return, and this offers the user 19 different editable parameters such as string resonance, damper resonance, key-off noise and more. The Smart Presets are pre-configured combinations of the above parameters, and this is a faster way to modify the piano tone to your liking. Polyphony is strong at 192 notes, and the speakers are beefy at 40 watts of output power. This is enough power to fill even a medium-sized room with some nice warmth. Overall, the sound is quite similar to the CN29 when playing with the speakers, but the differences really emerge when plugging in a set of headphones, with the CN201 definitely taking a step forward. Piano Action Kawai’s Responsive Hammer III action (RHIII) makes a return, though this is a new and improved version; the sensors have been upgraded, as has the key cushioning. The result is a much quieter action from a mechanical perspective, which should also improve long-term durability. In terms of weighting, there’s no difference from the previous RHIII version, which puts it around what you would find in a 5’7” grand piano. The repetition is good, but slightly slower than what the upper-level Kawai actions are capable of. The surface is a micro-texture that absorbs moisture when playing, with a nice balance between grip and slip. The escapement is included to replicate the feel of a grand piano, and the RHIII is also outfitted with a triple sensor for accurate MIDI output. This new RHIII will continue to be featured throughout much of Kawai’s lineup, including the new CN301, ES920, DG30 and MP7SE. Features/Connectivity A nice upgrade over the CN29 is the inclusion of the newest version of Bluetooth and the inclusion of Bluetooth Audio in addition to Bluetooth MIDI. The CN201 also has dual headphone jacks and a USB to host.
