After almost all French tram systems had been shut down in the previous decades, the unprecedented return of the tram as a modern, efficient means of transport began in the mid-1980s. In 1994, the city of Strasbourg in Alsace became the third French city with a modern tram system. The 100% low-floor, specially developed Eurotram vehicle type attracted particular attention; its particularly large windows meant it was perceived as a "rolling sidewalk". Since 2005, the more cost-effective Citadis 403 type has been purchased, which now makes up a large part of the fleet and has replaced the oldest Eurotrams.
