Inequality in the UK is high compared to other developed nations. Poverty is much higher than it used to be a few decades ago. But in recent years we have seen the wealth held by the super rich increasing. It turns out that there was a massive spike in poverty since 1979. When Maragret Thatcher came to power. As she deindustrialised Britain and clamped down on the trade unions. Have you felt poorer recently? Well, it’s not that surprising. Since 2007 Real wages have remained stagnant. But at the same time house prices have been in a fairly persistent uptrend. And this is one of the main reasons British working people have got poorer and poorer. The number of people that have managed to buy a home has been falling and falling. While at the same time wealth is increasingly being centralised in the hands of the super rich. Oxfam found that the top 62 of people in the world own the same amount of wealth as the bottom 50%. But as wealth becomes more and more centralised in the hands of a few very rich people, it can be disastrous for the population. Inequality is associated with: Increased poverty. Increased crime rates. The rise of extremism. Lower wages. Lost trust in democracy. It almost seems like reducing inequality could be in the interests of everybody. Including the super rich! And there is a solution. There is a way to fix the system. I talk about it near the end of the documentary.
