Carnal Thoughts and Spiritual Thoughts Jesus Christ being baptized by John the Baptist to take upon Himself all the sins of the world at once, bearing those sins, dying on the Cross, and resurrecting was to fulfill the righteous requirement of the law given to mankind that “the wages of sin is death,” that is, God’s righteousness. We are continuing our life of faith by believing in that grace to save us from sin, and as Apostle Paul testified, we have received the remission of sins in the assurance that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Regarding with what faith we should live after receiving such salvation, Apostle Paul specifically delivers a precious teaching from the perspective of the ‘difference in thinking.’ Romans 8:5 says that those who follow the flesh think of the things of the flesh, and those who follow the Spirit think of the things of the Spirit. This means that the one who follows the flesh and the one who follows the Spirit coexist within us. The following verse 6 specifies, “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Here, ‘Spirit’ means God, and ‘flesh’ refers to our own thoughts or the mind pursuing physical comfort.
