After losing a lead of 6 points in the final 3 minutes 19 seconds, Houston allowed North Carolina State to win its second National Collegiate Athletic Association championship when Lorenzo Charles, a 6-foot-7-inch sophomore forward, grabbed a missed 35-foot desperation shot by Dereck Whittenburg and dunked it for a 54-52 victory tonight at University Arena. ''They thought I was going to shoot it, but it was a pass,'' Whittenburg said, and smiled. ''And Lorenzo was waiting. That's the way we designed it on the blackboard.'' But later on, Whittenburg told the truth. ''I was looking up, trying to find the clock,'' he said. ''I couldn't find it. I didn't want to hold the ball as time ran out. So the only thing I thought was to get it up at the basket. When I shot, I was looking at it to go in. And then I saw Lorenzo dunk it, and then time ran out.''
