Prime Minister Keir Starmer shrugged off criticism of his government's record on immigration and tax policy on Wednesday (December 11), against the backdrop of a rally by thousands of farmers protesting against inheritance tax changes outside parliament. Speaking during the weekly prime minister's question session in parliament on Wednesday, leader of the opposition Conservative Party Kemi Badenoch said Starmer's government had made it easier for migrants to enter the UK on small boats crossing the English Channel. Starmer responded that a recent agreement with Germany was designed to do the opposite. On Monday (December 9), Germany said it would close a legal loophole that enabled human traffickers to store the small boats they use to cross the English Channel as part of a broader German-British deal to tackle people-smuggling, the British interior ministry said. In a fiery exchange, Badenoch said Starmer had supported criminals over the British people. He pointed to his record as Director of Public Prosecutions, saying: "I dedicated five years of my life to law enforcement, locking up criminals. Which is more than she can say."
