The Santa Cruz, California-based company aims to launch commercial services in the Arabian Gulf emirate by 2026. The tests, which involved vertical take-off and wingborne flight, were conducted in coordination with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority. Joby Aviation’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is designed to carry one pilot and up to four passengers at speeds of up to 320 kmph with zero operational emissions and minimal noise. Joby Aviation was granted exclusive rights in 2024 to operate air taxis in Dubai for a six-year period. The successful trial in Dubai now positions the firm as one of the frontrunners in the emerging eVTOL sector. JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, said: “The United Arab Emirates is a launchpad for a global revolution in how we move. In addition to building a performant aircraft, we’ve also been maturing our program for anticipated passenger service with global operational capabilities and scalable, durable manufacturing. “Our flights and operational footprint in Dubai are a monumental step toward weaving air taxi services into the fabric of daily life worldwide. With our visionary partners, we’re igniting a future where quiet, clean flight is the new normal, and we’re demonstrating the leadership of American innovation on the global stage.” Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s RTA, attended the test flights of the Joby electric taxi in Dubai. He stated that the trials align with Dubai’s strategy to introduce sustainable and future-ready transportation solutions. Al Tayer added that Joby’s air taxi service will offer rapid, safe, and environmentally friendly mobility options across key areas of Dubai City. The electric aircraft is expected to operate on high-demand urban routes such as Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, a trip projected to take just 12 minutes, down from the current 45-minute car journey. Other proposed routes include Dubai Marina and Downtown Dubai. Vertiport construction is already underway at selected locations. Dubai’s RTA has stated that air taxis will complement existing public transport systems and promote integration with other mobility modes such as e-scooters and bicycles. The test flights in Dubai follow nearly two years of extreme weather testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Joby says these trials were aimed at assessing aircraft performance in high temperatures, a key factor for successful deployment in the Gulf region. Dubai's partnership with Joby reflects the UAE’s intention to play a leading role in the development of next-generation mobility infrastructure. The air taxi programme is part of a vision to modernise urban transport while supporting the country's carbon reduction goals. While Joby has not announced a specific launch date for passenger operations, the company plans to begin commercial services by 2026, pending final regulatory approvals. Officials have indicated that pilot training and operational planning are progressing in parallel with aircraft testing and infrastructure development. The aircraft's design is focused on short urban routes, aiming to reduce travel times and traffic congestion while minimising environmental impact. Joby’s aircraft has already logged over 40,000 miles in test flights globally, demonstrating piloted transition flights and multi-aircraft operations. Dubai’s early adoption of electric air taxis could serve as a model for other cities across the Middle East and Africa, where interest in advanced mobility technologies is growing. Analysts say that such initiatives will be closely monitored by regional regulators and urban planners seeking to replicate Dubai’s integrated and forward-looking approach to urban transportation.
