The Edison Diamond Disc was a type of phonograph record developed by Thomas Edison and introduced in 1912. It was distinct from other records of the time due to its vertical (hill-and-dale) groove recording method and its unusual thickness (about 1/4 inch or 6 mm). Here are some key points: Characteristics: Material: A core of compressed wood flour and other fillers, coated with a hard plastic surface. Groove Format: Vertical-cut grooves (unlike the lateral-cut grooves used by Victor and Columbia). Playback: Required a special diamond stylus and Edison phonograph – not compatible with standard players. Size & Speed: Most were 10-inch discs playing at 80 RPM, offering about 4–5 minutes per side. Pros: High audio fidelity for the time. Durable due to the thick, hard composition. Cons: Not compatible with other phonographs. Heavy and bulky. Limited music selection compared to Victor and Columbia. They were popular through the 1910s and early 1920s, but by 1929, the Edison company exited the phonograph market, and Diamond Discs became obsolete.
