Inspired by that example, thousands of Egyptians took to the streets for three weeks of protests and forced Hosni Mubarak to step down. Protests also succeeded in Yemen, where its long-time president resigned in June. After a longer and bloddier battle, opposition forces in Libya brought an end to the regime of Moammar Gadhafi. But the Arab Spring has not succeeded everywhere. In Syria, the regime of President Bashar al-Assad remains in power despite protests that have killed more than 5000.
