Did you know that you can shoot almost any vintage Leica Thread Mount or M39 lens on any M mount camera body? Everything is possible, from early Leica M3 cameras all the way up to the modern M11 but also Voigtländer or Carl Zeiss cameras with M bayonet work. There are various adapters available from Leica, Voigtländer, Novoflex, Urth and others. They are designed to ensure the correct flange distance, to focus correctly via the rangefinder and, most importantly, to select and show the correct frame lines in the viewfinder when the lens is attached to the camera body. This last information is communicated via these small mechanical bumps here. More modern adapters support newer frame line pairs such as 28/90mm or 50/75mm. The original vintage Leica adapters often mention just one of these frame lines - for instance 9cm - as the wider version had not been released at the time but they work perfectly fine as well. Such vintage originals can cost up to 120 Euros. Yet, there are many more affordable alternatives by K&F or Urth on the market. Here, I have an Urth adapter which costs only 23 Euros. As it is wise to leave the adapters on the lens and practically have one adapter per lens, costs can explode quickly depending on how many M39 lenses you intend to adapt. In my case, I wanted to give it a try with my vintage 28mm f/6.3 Hektor and 50mm f/2 Summar lenses and love the results.
