From Crucibles to Comebacks: The 3 Ps That Change How You Handle Setbacks | Seeing the System This video wasn't recorded on a stage. It was recorded in training. I joined Toastmasters to sharpen one skill: speaking with clarity under pressure. This was my Icebreaker — my very first speech. The theme: how we grow through what we go through. I explored psychologist Martin Seligman’s framework of the “Three Ps” — the stories we tell ourselves when things don’t go our way: • Personal • Permanent • Pervasive Most setbacks aren’t just external events. They become internal narratives. And those narratives shape our decisions, our confidence, and our future. The live version received powerful feedback — not because it was perfect, but because it was real. This recording is part of the process. Part of the training. Part of the comeback. Why do some people bounce back from adversity while others get stuck? Psychologist Martin Seligman spent decades studying this question, and his answer comes down to three stories we tell ourselves — the Three Ps: Personal, Permanent, and Pervasive. In this video, I walk you through each one using a real-world scenario most of us can relate to, and show you how changing the story changes the outcome. This isn't just about feeling better — it's about thinking more accurately. And accurate thinking, seen through a systems lens, creates better decisions and different futures. I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts: Which of the Three Ps do you struggle with most? Did any part of this resonate? What story have you been telling yourself lately? Drop your reflections in the comments. Let’s build better narratives together. 🔗 CONNECT WITH ME: ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔗 All Links: https://mylink.yassinesellami.com 📰 Substack: https://seeingthesystem.substack.com 💼 LinkedIn: / yassinesellami ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 — Introduction 1:29 — The Three Ps: Personal, Permanent, Pervasive 1:56 — The Promotion Scenario 2:16 — First P: Personal vs. Situational 3:14 — Second P: Permanent vs. Temporary 3:30 — Third P: Pervasive vs. Specific 4:10 — The Power Is in the Meaning You Choose 📖 REFERENCES: Title: Learned Helplessness in Humans: Critique and Reformulation Authors: Lyn Y.
