Saturday 1st November 2025. North Cotswold Hunt. Opening meet Springhill. With Cirencester Illegal Huntwatch. Notes re footage: It was probably Nick McDermott (whipper in whose job it is to stop hounds if they are hunting wild mammals) who spoke to the sab’ about the onus of responsibility for stopping the hounds being her calling Mr Longman and NOT Sam, in retrospect. Grabbing spray whip, holding camera and radio there was no time to also get the maps up and they went to Lower Slate Pits NOT Half Moon which is also nearby. The fox on film came from a direction other than Coronation Plantation and the hounds came from a different direction. Was the fox on film the hunted fox, were there two foxes? We do not know for certain either way but hounds ran right to where that fox had gone and a well known hunt supporter holloaed. A definition of holloaing from one of the many hunting books we possess, “Holloa, (or ‘View Holloa’, pronounced ‘Holler’) the shout or screech given by someone who has just seen the fox; the intention is to inform the huntsman and hounds of the fact”, Michael Clayton, 1987, “The Chase, A Modern Guide to Fox Hunting”, Page 145, He was the editor of Horse and Hound for decades and their hunting correspondent. Some of us were up early checking badger setts to see if any had been blocked. Two were found blocked, one soft blocked and one with slate and bricks but we think that was some time during cub hunting. Most were not blocked, an improvement but could do better. The first draw (where they try and find a fox), was in the Beauchamp Clump/Polish Camp direction. However, they changed their minds when they saw sabs and rapidly headed south into Kildanes. From there they hunted across the road into Jockey stables but with sabs there they gave up and the pack had split. Huntsman Sam Brown spent an age gathering them then it was north again to Globe Hill, Hare Park Plantation with sabs positioned well around them. They then went through Bourne’s Folly and into Coronation Plantation. One of us coming from Hornsleasow saw a fox come from the north east over the dry stone wall at Freeboard Wood and then towards Lower Slatepits. A prominent hunt supporter called Jean was then heard holloaing, this is a high pitched call which tells humans and hounds that the hunted animal has been sighted. Hounds came along from Coronation plantation and may have been on a separate fox as they took a different line and we were unable to stop them. Neither could Nick despite the fact that they were going in the same direction as at least one fox, but we think he didn’t want to stop them, he made no attempt to. We do not know the outcome for the fox. Gloucestershire Police arrived shortly afterwards and they went over to Sezincoate Warren (a very deep, thick, dense covert…difficult to access, a good place to hide) where they spent until it was dark trying to gather hounds. A shoot was also in progress and beaters were met coming from the Toad Corner direction. Wildlife was caught between a sizable shoot and a fox hunt. Also worthy of note is that it seems that many hunts decided to hold their opening meet on the same day to dilute how many of them sabs could attend. We urge that our supporters write to their MPs asking when the Hunting Act consultation and following legislation will take place. We get an incredible amount of info on hunts - keep us informed of meets and other intel on our tip-off line: 07891 639803 We attend at least 100 meets per season - if you can help us carry on helping wildlife, please share our posts to raise awareness and, if you can, chuck us a few quid at PayPal.me/threecountiessabs We have a lot of information on our website which may help answer your questions about hunting: www.network23.org/3CHuntSabs and a number of videos on our Vimeo and YouTube channels which you can check out for more of an idea of what our local hunts, and others, get up to throughout the year: www.vimeo.com/threecountiessabs / @3cveganhuntsabs Find us also on InstaGram, Twitter and Bluesky (although Facebook is the platform we update most often!)
