Last week while I was on San Juan Island I went whale watching aboard the Western Prince. After searching for a few hours for the orcas we headed North into Canada and finally caught up with members of J pod. It was another wonderful encounter and I felt privileged to see them again. Every encounter with members of the Southern Resident orcas now feels extra special because there are only 75 individuals remaining in the population. Sadly, roughly one week after this video was taken, J35 had a calf that died after only 30 minutes. Five days later and she is still carrying her calf’s body around on her rostrum. This shows just how sentient these beings are. If we are going to save these orcas from extinction, we need to replenish their main food source as quickly as possible: Chinook Salmon. The fastest and easiest way to do this according to biologists from the Center for Whale Research is to breach the four lower dams on the Snake River.
