July 7, 1924, White House: President Calvin Coolidge's son, Calvin Jr., age 16, died. Cal died from septic poisoning caused by blister from playing tennis. Cal played tennis on White House courts wearing shoes without socks. Developed blister on toe. Blister became infected. Infection entered bloodstream. 1924: no antibiotics existed. No treatment for blood poisoning. July 3-7: Cal's condition deteriorated. High fever, delirium. July 7, 10:30 PM: Cal died. Coolidge devastated. But Coolidge didn't just grieve—Coolidge blamed himself. Coolidge wrote in autobiography: "When he went, power and glory of Presidency went with him. I do not know why such price was exacted for occupying White House." Coolidge told staff: "If I had not been President, he would not have raised blister on his toe." Coolidge believed being president killed his son. Cal got blister at White House tennis courts. If not president, family wouldn't have been at White House. Guilt haunted Coolidge rest of his life. Changed his presidency. Lost joy in office. 1928: refused to run for reelection. Died 1933, never forgave himself. #coolidge #calvincoolidge #CalvinCoolidgeJr #1924 #whitehouse #presidentialhistory #tragedy #CalvinJr #SilentCal #PresidentialGreif #americanhistory #historydocumentary #historicaldocumentary #politicalhistory Disclaimer: Based on Coolidge's autobiography, contemporaneous accounts, and verified documentation.
