SOUTH KESTEVEN PARISH #11: SEDGEBROOK Sedgebrook – “Brook where Sedges Grows” Its time for another South Kesteven episode, and this week we are taking a look at Sedgebrook – a village which not a lot of people will know, even though its quite close to a major town. Sedgebrook lies just North of the busy A52 just to the East of Grantham. Quiet and secluded, its name originates from two Anglo Saxon words – Secg, which means “Sedge” and “Broc”, which means brook or stream. This one may have originated back in Roman times, but that’s not definitively known. It was situated in the centre of a network of pre Roman trade routes and major Roman Roads. By the time of the Norman Conquest, Sedgebrook was an established Saxon stronghold, held by Godwin of Barrowby. The village became manorial, a setup which continued until 1925 when the land it sits upon was sold off. It hasn’t seen much in the way of massive development since then. Indeed, the only major area that’s been added is a housing estate to the North and West of the village green, which was built in 1972. There are some really interesting pieces of history in this one, some that will open your eyes to life in rural Lincolnshire. In some small part too, Sedgebrook also has connections to Yorkshire by way of an ancient abbey, which was supressed in 1536. It all sounds good right?
