My written review: From the tin, Wessex Burley Slice is presented as one long flake folded over several times. It has some moisture but I did not need to give it any drying time. The tin note is a Burley lovers fantasy. Deep, Rich, aged Burleys with Cocoa. The Burleys are deep, rich, and have the signature aged Burley taste that I always associate the aroma of autumn leaves. I also think of this note as wood like. I sometimes refer to its as the “Mahogany Burley” flavor. There is earthiness present, as well as nuttiness, and some noticeable spice that is amplified through the retrohale. There is a cocoa topping lightly applied but works very well with the burleys to boost the flavor profile more so than change it. I get a hint of the licorice topping mentioned on the tin, but just barely, and it also works well with the Burleys. There is some semi sweetness present, making me believe there is a touch of molasses applied as well. The toppings work together to provide a lot of richness to the blend. Burley Slice isn’t super nuanced. It is very simple with a few key flavors that are deep, rich, and smooth while at the same time loud and amplified. It stayed lit as well as any flake can, and burns slowly and coolly, unless you really push it. Not a nicotine bomb, but there is enough present to satisfy. Smokes best when packed on the loose side. Note: I know a lot of people will be wondering, so here is my take on ABF vs WBS. WBS has more topping, is richer tasting, and the Burleys have a touch more body and depth. I also never experience a bitter/sour note with WBS. ABF is more straight burley, allowing the aged burley’s to shine through more, but slightly less body and a hair less depth in the flavor profile.
