We interrupt the intended Splatoon 2 footage to bring you Tetris 99, because the Nintendo Direct suddenly dropped this game onto the Switch's eShop with very little warning. Like, as in a matter of hours after it was announced in the Direct. (Not to worry, coverage of Puyo Puyo Tetris will continue. That game's far too charming for me to simply abandon, even if I play it way less than I used to.) The PS4 gets The Tetris Effect, made by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the man behind Meteos, Lumines, and Rez/Child of Eden, and it looks like the Switch gets Tetris 99. The budget for this one is a lot lower than Tetris Effect, but to be fair, it's free-to-play. There are no signs of things to pay for yet, though I'd expect some to show up eventually. Whether or not I buy them, I have no idea. It'll depend on how compelling it is and if I keep playing Tetris 99. The "99" in the title is not because it's based on how Tetris was like in 1999 or that you can use it to party like it's 1999. Or that it's 99 cents, of course. Rather, this game is made of online play in which 99 people play at once, which is the record for Tetris by a long shot. When you start a match, the game will search for 98 other people (though there will be times when there are fewer than that), and once everyone is synchronized, gameplay begins. It's Tetris as usual--if you don't know the drill, blocks fall down, you have to complete rows to clear them, and you lose if the fifth column is filled to the top. The game has almost no instructions, and you have to figure out what everything means as you play. To that end, I think I have a good idea of how this works. Because so many people play at once and people get eliminated quickly and rapidly, this game refers to itself as a Battle Royale type game. I had expected a lot of video games to piggyback off of Fortnite's success (and, of coutse, Fortnite itself is riding off of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds), but I hadn't expected Tetris to be one of them! And so, let's begin, shall we? Match #1 This is my debut match for Tetris 99. I don't think I did too badly, considering there were probably people here playing since the game was made available on the eShop. For now, the game is very bare-bones, with only one skin, one set of songs, and one game mode. You also don't get to see any of your opponents' names until you're done playing, though like what you should expect from a Battle Royale game, you can leave and find another room later on. For the record, the playfield with the green hexagon on it is the one your garbage blocks will go to, and the playfields with the yellow lines connecting them to the "Watch Out" sign at the bottom indicate which players have targeted you. On the list of how everyone placed, your name and position will have a purple background, and if another one has a red background, that's the player who eliminated you. If I keep playing this game, I'll put in more match data if they expand on Tetris 99 in the future. Match #2 Now that I've gotten the hang of Tetris again, I was playing faster and more aggressively, and this second match is where I got my first KOs. When this happens, a computerized voice will say "KO," and the player who got KOed will have an opaque yellow hexagon instead of the usual translucent greenish-gray one. A KO awards you a badge, which is shown on your playfield as chevrons on the lower right and on the upper-left on the opponents' playfields. Players eliminated but continuing to watch will have a green eye on the upper-right of their KO icons. Of course, you don't necessarily have to play aggressively. Since the goal is to be the last one standing, playing strictly defensively is perfectly acceptable too, just like in Fortnite. Match #3 If you've watched the video, you may have noticed the music changes when 50 players remain (to a sped up, tenser version of Korobeiniki), and again when 10 players remain (to a remix of "Flight of the Bumblebee"). In addition to the change in music, the drop speed will increase drastically. That took me by surprise in Match #2--though to be fair, I was already on the verge of losing--but I knew that would happen in this one.
