Kristi visits with Dr. Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Extension Specialist for Food and Nutrition, to discuss nutrition fraud. Nutrition fraud is very similar to health fraud. It is probably the most common form of health fraud in our day and age. Essentially, consumers are misled to believe that a productor idea, and in the case of nutrition, it is going to be a specific food, food group, diet, product, or supplement, can provide some specific benefit that makes the item or concept worth purchasing. Companies and marketing strategies want us to develop an exaggerated or unsupported belief. Think about standing in line at the checkout at the grocery –the magazine covers, flipping through TV channels and seeing a talk show or infomercial. More and more books are promoting nutrition claims and authors may not be nutrition professionals. We haven’t even mentioned the internet yet! Stay curious! Simply ask questions and don’t believe everything you read, see, or hear right away. It is okay to want more information and ask questions–that is being a wise consumer. We want to look for nutrition experts that are called registered dietitians or licensed dietitian. These folks will have an RD/RDN or LD after their name to show their credentials. They are specifically trained to understand how food is related to health and make evidence-recommendations to promote health. You can get all of this from your local Extension Office.
