The melody was composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797, having the same melody as the German anthem Deutschlandlied. It was originally known as "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", as the personal anthem to Francis II. The lyrics in this anthem were adopted in 1854, and this continued after the Ausgleich of 1867 which transformed the Austrian Empire into a dual monarchy with Hungary. It was used until the dissolution of the empire in 1918. The song was written when Austria was seriously threatened by Revolutionary France and patriotic sentiments ran high.
