Broadcast performance for Channel 4's Rock Steady series, live from The Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline, May 1, 1990. This video was a real team effort to bring this clip to the magnificent quality you now find it. The show was already uploaded to two YouTube channels, one by Keith Lewington and one by Lee Yin Cheong. With the kind permission of both clips' uploaders, Alan Anbari went to work to bring the clip up to scratch using the techniques he has successfully used on the previous full HD uploads of late. Keith's clip had better quality picture, Yee's clip had better quality audio from which to start so these have been combined in this one. For those who enjoy the 'work in progress' side of things, Alan notes some key points in the work on this clip: "Keith was massively helpful in giving feedback on my work in progress. The final version looks quite fine, I must say - but it would probably look worse if it weren't for his input. Also, we need to credit both source copies, because this would have been immensely more difficult and the results would not have been as good without what Keith and Yee had already shared. It was a luxury being able to look at them both whenever I wanted to compare or to fix little issues! From both of the sources, I used video exclusively from Keith's copy, because he was able to send me his original transfer, before YT compression. The quality, especially in terms of sharpness and details was several steps higher than what is on YT. This really made the final version look fantastic! The audio is 95+% from Yee's copy as transferred by Andy originally. It was a little clearer and longer (time wise) than Keith's copy. I edited all the slightly longer broadcast breaks in Yee's copy to match the audio from Keith's copy exactly, so there are no sync issues. In a few places, where Yee had a gaps or there was a VHS glitch, I borrowed a note, chord, or bar or two from Keith's copy. Stuart also made very brief comments before PIOT and IABC that were not in both copies. The one before PIOT could not be included, because we would hear Stuart speaking but see him nowhere near the microphone. I just threw in him saying "In a Big Country," because it was so brief. So those were the only real differences in the two audio tracks, just a few edits and corrections. My additional comments would be that the guitars were a lot murkier and too low in the broadcast mix than the drums and especially the bass (facts confirmed by both Keith and Yee). Tony was almost insanely loud in both copies! I toned that down some, but it was clearly a bassy sound, so I left that impression in the final mix. The guitars had some sort of glitch in Look Away (opening number). It seems to be an effect pedal volume set too low. It happens right in the transition to the chorus. The first time Stuart looks down at his guitar to see if it's something he can fix quickly (I think). Because we don't hear those notes at all the first time through, I pasted them in from the second time (there was no audio there at all the first time). My reason for making this correction was that we can see him and Bruce playing but hear nothing. That's clearly a technical/gear error, not that they forgot to play something. It's still not very loud, but pushing the levels any higher there would have resulted in distortion. In general, I raised the guitar levels throughout the whole show, because we know they weren't meant to be low in the mix, according to everything else the band ever did. Several places Bruce and Stuart's guitars could be separated, and Stuart's solo acoustic songs also sound pretty close to stereo. This is accomplished through EQing: L and R have different EQ curves, so some notes seem louder on each channel. Otherwise, the audio was quite good, but the sound was probably not very wide in the hall, because it doesn't seem to be very big, so I went for less width and a more intimate and upfront sound. Not too different from Eclectic." Keith has three fantastic YouTube channels. They can be found at / @keefhqvideos / @keefsvhslibrary / @keefhidefvideos Check them out, they are a must subscribe for all music lovers! A huge debt of gratitude to everyone who made this clip possible. To Big Country for making all of this possible, of course. Alan in the engine room for all that he does for us. Keith for his clip, knowledge and advice and very kind permission for it to be posted to BC1000Stars, and to Yee for his video and permission for its use in the making and posting of this one. A real team effort!
