In this episode we discuss the three tiers of drinker as defined by us. For a full overview of the tiers see show notes below. Also - apologies but there was a bit of a balls up with the recording and for some reason we only got the audio for this one! As always thanks for listening to The 'We Quit' Booze Brothers' Below is an excerpt from a yet to be published book written by Mark that explains the Tiers in more detail: In my experience, people who drink alcohol fall into one of three tiers. Tier One, the moderate drinkers, are the best kind. In fact, they are the only kind that can safely consume alcohol in my opinion because for them there is never a pull to over-indulge. The Tier One drinker will wrap up after one or two glasses of wine and they never feel compelled to drink more. I would say that my wife falls within this category. She will have one or two glasses of wine and she doesn’t even think about the need for moderation. My brother who has written a book on quitting alcohol (Man Gets Sober) says that anyone who needs to think about moderation, fundamentally struggles to moderate. Then there are the Tier Two drinkers, within which I included myself. Worth noting at this point that all three tiers include a scale. There are the low-end Tier Two drinkers and then there are the high-end ones. The problem with this tier is that wherever you are on the scale, you are at an ongoing risk of progressing higher up the scale and even into Tier Three. After all, alcohol, which is ethanol, is a highly addictive, psychoactive, group-one carcinogen, considered by society to be an almost required social undertaking. And we wonder why it causes problems. Tier Two drinkers love to drink. We don’t consider ourselves alcoholics though, and we tend to only drink within what ‘society’ defines to be socially acceptable parameters: never before 6pm, weekends only… OK maybe occasionally midweek, sometimes lunchtime, once in a while afternoons…you get the point. What we do experience, however, are moments of overindulgence, tiredness, alcohol-induced anxiety (hangxiety) and moments of regret. ‘Why did I feel the need to have those extra drinks?’ We experience hangovers, tiredness, bad temper and in many cases a pernicious decline that results in a problematic relationship with booze. Tier Three drinkers are those unfortunate souls who end up with a physical addiction. Of course, alcohol abuse is typically something that develops. Lest any of us judge, I would point out that all Tier Three drinkers started in Tier Two, and let’s face it, Tier Two is most of us!
