When facing surgery, a patient may wonder which option is the best for them. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally-invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique where operations are performed far from their location through small incisions. This method has become increasingly popular over traditional open surgery, although there are situations in which open surgery is still preferable. Robotic-assisted surgery is the latest evolution of minimally invasive surgical procedures and provides many of the same benefits as laparoscopic procedures including a faster recovery, less pain and bleeding and a lower chance of infection. However, robotic surgery offers additional benefits as well. With robotic-assisted surgery, surgeons are able to see 3-dimensionally, just as we do in real life. With laparoscopic surgery, we lose that ability. Robotic surgical instruments also offer better dexterity than the human hands and wrists have. As a result, robotic surgery gives additional precision, flexibility and control than conventional surgery techniques.
