2021 Kāne Kahiko Performance | Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi

Under the direction of Kumu Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes, the kāne of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi performs "He Inoa No Nāihe". He Inoa No Nāihe is a surf chant for Nāihe, son of Keaweaheulu and Ululani, who were the kūpuna kualua, great-great-grandparents, of King David Laʹamea Kalākaua. Nāihe was an accomplished orator and athlete, whose expertise in the dangerous sport of surfing made his fellow chiefs envious. Plotting to get rid of Nāihe, the jealous chiefs invited him to participate in a surfing contest in Hilo, where they conspired to kill him. Upon learning of this evil plot, Nāihe’s elderly chantress ran to the shoreline and chanted Nāihe’s surf chant that praised her chief and the surf that he rode, that ultimately brought him safely back to shore.
