On Saturday 13 May 2023, the Anscombe Bioethics Centre hosted an event at St Mary’s College, Oscott on ‘Pandemic Vaccination: Safety, Efficacy, and Scientific Literacy’. The Centre brought together a medical educator, an immunologist and an economist to explore the science behind vaccines and way that vaccine policy was, or was not, scientifically informed. The event was to address the concerns that people raise about the efficacy and safety of vaccines, and about COVID-19 vaccines in particular. It was aimed specifically at assisting clergy and future clergy develop their scientific and ethical literacy regarding vaccinations, to help them navigate polarised and competing claims, and therefore best support those who are in their pastoral care. It was funded by the 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 programme as part of ECLAS (𝐄quipping 𝐂hristian 𝐋eadership in an 𝐀ge of 𝐒cience): https://www.eclasproject.org/science-... In this video, Dr Dominic Kelly addresses important scientific issues. Dr Kelly is BRC Consultant on Paediatrics and Vaccinology at the Oxford Vaccine Group where the Oxford / AstroZeneca vaccine was developed (though he was not directly involved in the development of that vaccine).
