When her ailing brother, Baldwin IV took the throne in 1174 after their father's death, it was clear to everyone that his afflictions from leprosy contracted as a child were not going to produce an heir, to it was Sibylla's duty to continue the family line. By 1176 she was married by arrangement to William Longsword of Montferrat, who died before the birth of their only son, Baldwin V. Though Sibylla was "hot property" to aspiring nobles who sought her hand in marriage with a view to gaining control of Jerusalem, Sibylla ultimately remained single for four more years, after other attempts to arrange matches had failed for various and often undisclosed reasons. Her brother, King Baldwin IV, personally matched her with Guy of Lusignan in 1180, as Guy was well connected and seemed to have a lot of potential. Sibylla bore Guy two daughters. It didn't take long for King Baldwin to realize that appointing Guy as regent during periods where his own illness made him unable to perform his duties was the result of a great error in judgement on his part. Guy's incompetence as a leader screwed political relations up so badly that Baldwin decreed that Sibylla's son by her first husband was to be his successor and co-regent. This way, he bypassed Guy and Sibylla's claim to the throne entirely in the event of his death. King Baldwin IV did die in 1185 from the complications of his leprosy, and eight year old Baldwin V was named his successor. The arrangement was short lived, as sickly little Baldwin died barely over a year into his reign. Though Sibylla was the natural successor to the throne, even despite her deceased brother's wishes that a regent be appointed until Baldwin V's family decided on a permanent successor, there were those who felt that Sibylla's half-sister Isabella should be crowned Queen, and even went as far as to assert that Sibylla's own birth was illegitimate and that she had no rights to inherit. The Latin Church ruled once and for all that such a charge was slanderous nonsense and that Sibylla had all legitimate and legal rights to the throne as the daughter of Amalric I, and she was crowned as sole Queen in 1186. It was surprising that she named Guy as her husband and had him crowned (after a fashion), which some speculate was HIS idea more than hers, as Guy thought of himself as being much more capable and influential than he was, and that any power he DID possess was in fact given to him only by the charity of others. While Sibylla was an effective leader and strategist, her husband was often the undoing of her efforts with his foolhardy incompetence, which caused him to be captured in the Battle of Hattin in 1187, leaving her to personally organize the defense against an attack on the Holy Land that same year. Guy was of little value as a prisoner, as others who had taken his place in his absence were much more powerful and capable, so he was released in 1188. When he and Sibylla tried to find sanctuary in Tyre, the only intact kingdom amidst the chaos, the brother of Sibylla's first husband denied them (but specifically GUY) entrance to the realm. Guy had the brilliant idea to try to organize a crusade against Acre with a view to making Acre the new seat of the kingdom. Two years into the crusade which had all but stalled, Sibylla and her daughters died from an epidemic that had been sweeping through the military camp in 1190. Her half-sister Isabella was next in line to the throne, though Guy refused to give up his crown until an election forced him to in 1192. *Perhaps because her life as Queen was so short, there are virtually no images or physical descriptions of Sibylla to be found. I extracted the features seen here from images & physical descriptions of her grandparents, parents, and brother. She has Assyrian, Armenian, Greek, Arab, and French heritage in her family tree, which also found its way into the portrait. Her father & brother had blonde hair and blue eyes, while her half-sister had black hair. Existing images seem to demonstrate that Sibylla was somewhere in the middle of those two extremes. The lack of description of her tells me that she was neither extraordinarily ugly nor beautiful, but apparently was able to instill a strong sense of loyalty from unexpected sources, which may have suggested a "powerful" appearance.
