SURF'S UP! Thanks to an offshore hurricane! Date in title off by 1 year-done in 2016! We still managed to make a day out of it, though, as we reprise our route of September 2013 on this Labor Day drive. Again, as back then, a toll-free route. This requires going "up and around" through Delaware, but one sees more of the Eastern Shore this way, and it's not all that bad of a route. A decent change from the more direct Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Part of this route has its perils though, namely Delaware Route 9! You'll see! We use the original US 1 to Rising Sun MD (what else is new?) then go on to Newark for a tad bit of railfanning (another great thing about this route). Then south to Delaware City and Port Penn before heading to the resort towns of Lewes and Rehoboth DE, and of course-Ocean City! Now that we're down the ocean, let's walk the boardwalk and check it out! Just look at all this stuff! What to do, what to do... Simple! Stop and have some of the best French fries in the world! Sorry if you get hungry watching! As far as that hurricane goes (Hermine), very little wind and only slightly larger waves! But apparently some folks were scared away; the boardwalk was considerably less busy than usual around Labor Day. By the way-this day is also Dolly's 60th birthday!! Thought I'd give her the Atlantic Ocean for her gift-same as I do every year. The drive home, as usual, becomes a night odyssey. We use 2-lane back roads to the Bay Bridge instead of staying on US 50 (OC id US 50's easternmost terminus). Crossing west on the Bridge is free; you're charged double crossing east.
