Hernias caused by open surgeries are referred to as incisional hernias. Dr. Balasubramaniam Ramana, Consultant-General Surgery and Robotic Surgery at RN Tagore Hospital, Kolkata, discusses how hernia can develop after an open surgical procedure and what steps can be taken to prevent it. After undergoing open abdominal surgery, the risk of developing a hernia increases significantly. An incisional hernia occurs when the abdominal wall is weakened due to surgical cuts and stitches, causing part of the abdominal contents to push through and create a bulge. In some cases, the muscle does not fully recover, leaving the area susceptible to hernia development. Why Do Hernias Happen After Surgery? During open surgery, the abdominal wall is cut, and the healing process can sometimes leave the area weak. This can happen especially in surgeries such as: Hysterectomy C-section Gallbladder surgery Liver surgery Heart operations If the abdominal muscles remain weak after recovery, the chances of an incisional hernia increase, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like obesity. The extra weight puts more pressure on the weakened muscles, which can result in hernia development. Obesity and Hernia: Obese individuals are at a higher risk of developing hernias post-surgery due to the additional strain on their abdominal muscles. This increased pressure can hinder the recovery of the muscle and contribute to hernia formation. Maintaining a healthy weight and following post-operative care instructions are essential to prevent complications like hernia. Prevention and Care: Post-Surgery Recovery: Adequate rest and following the doctor’s instructions for physical activity after surgery are critical in preventing hernia. Maintain Healthy Weight: Obese patients should take extra precautions, as weight control plays a significant role in reducing the risk of hernia. Monitor the Surgery Site: Regularly checking the surgery site for any signs of bulging or discomfort can help in detecting early signs of hernia development. If you have undergone open surgery, it is important to follow a proper recovery routine to avoid complications like hernia. Consulting your doctor and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are key to ensuring a smooth recovery process. #Hernia #Surgery #IncisionalHernia #AbdominalSurgery #PostOpHernia #SurgeryRecovery #HerniaPrevention Visit our website https://www.narayanahealth.org to know more about Narayana Health and its facilities.
