How do Orthodox Christian athletes balance high-intensity combat sports training with the discipline of fasting? During Great Lent, the Orthodox Church calls believers to a serious fast—traditionally removing meat and dairy while focusing on prayer, repentance, and spiritual discipline. For combat sports athletes, coaches, and strength & conditioning practitioners, this can raise a real challenge. Hard training requires fuel. Fighters burn a huge amount of energy through sparring, pad work, drilling, conditioning, and recovery sessions. When training volume is high, nutrition becomes critical for performance, recovery, and injury prevention. This is where the Orthodox principle of Oikonomia comes in. Oikonomia refers to pastoral guidance given by a priest to help apply the spiritual life of the Church in real-life circumstances. It doesn’t remove discipline, but it allows wisdom and flexibility when strict application of a rule could cause harm. For athletes, this may mean guidance on nutrition during demanding training periods while still maintaining the spirit of the fast. In this video we discuss the intersection of athleticism and asceticism—how fighters and serious athletes can pursue elite performance while still living an authentic Orthodox spiritual life. Combat sports demand discipline. The Orthodox spiritual life demands discipline. With the right guidance, those two paths can strengthen each other.
