HISTORIC FIGHTER FLIGHT LUFTWAFFE EUROFIGHTER ESCORT JAPANESE JASDF F-15s TO GERMANY • RAF CONINGSBY

This is not only extremely rare but a historic first, as two JADSF (Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15J depart RAF Coningsby for the first fighter flight from Coningsby, UK to Germany in its 71-year history. They landed at RAF Coningsby as part of the "Atlantic Eagles" mission. Escorting them to their forward journey to Germany were two Luftwaffe Eurofighter EF2000. In mid 1975 the Japan Defence Agency (now renamed Ministry of Defence) were looking for a replacement for their F-104 and F-4 Phantom aircraft. They decided on the F-15C and F-15D on evaluation, and the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries were given the contract in 1978. The designation were F-15J and F-15DJ for the family version (2 seater). The maiden flight was on the 4th June 1980 and entered service on the 7th December 1981.
