This week on Picture America, we feature photographer Cody Hammer, whose journey began when he was handed a camera while working at the Osage Nation. Living on the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma, Cody is Cherokee, while his wife and children are Osage; together, their lives are woven into the stories of this land. For Cody, photography isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about making connections. Through portraits, he honors culture and identity, capturing moments of pride, resilience, and humanity. His images showcase the beauty of Native communities while breaking down stereotypes, reminding the world that Indigenous people are not just a part of history, but thriving individuals and families today. From the first click of the shutter, Cody knew he had found his art form. Each portrait he creates is a gift to those he photographs, and a way of giving back to the community he loves. Cody Hammer, a Westville, Oklahoma native, is a Cinematographer for Cherokee Film Productions. Cody began his photography career at Osage Nation Communications when his unique eye caught the attention of Osage News. Cody continued to share his skills as a photojournalist for three years until he joined Cherokee Film. Cody’s passion for showcasing Natives and our stories through the camera lens evolved and grew when he joined “Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People” in 2022. Cody’s work ethic and humor bring the team together and push Cherokee Film Productions to break down barriers and bring Cherokee culture and traditions to audiences worldwide.
