An accused person in the murder trial of former Kabete MP George Muchai has denied any involvement in the killing, telling the High Court that he was running his meat business on the night the politician and three others were shot dead. While giving his defence, Raphael Kimani Gashie told the court that in February 2015 he operated a nyama choma and barbecue business at Muthangari along Musa Gitau Road under the name New Muthangari Bar and Restaurant. He said the business operated both during the day and at night and that he also delivered meat orders to clients through a phone number advertised along the road between ABC Place and Gitaru Junction. Gashie told the court that on the night of February 6 and 7, 2015, he was attending to customers and fulfilling orders at his business premises and had no involvement in the shooting incident that claimed the lives of Muchai and three others along Uhuru Highway. He further testified that on February 14, 2015, plain-clothed police officers raided his house, assaulted him and confiscated his phones, passport and wallet before taking him into custody. According to the accused, the officers repeatedly questioned him about money allegedly sent to his business phone number and about any relationship he might have had with the slain MP. The accused said he spent a night at the railway police station before being taken to court days later. He also told the court that police later sought a DNA sample from him, which was eventually taken at Kenyatta National Hospital following a court order. Gashie argued that several prosecution witnesses who testified during the trial did not identify him as one of the attackers. He cited testimonies from witnesses including a newspaper vendor, two women who were allegedly carjacked on the night of the incident and a taxi driver, all of whom, he said, did not place him at the scene of the crime. He also challenged the credibility of an identification parade allegedly conducted at Kamukunji Police Station, claiming that official records did not show he had been booked there on the date in question.
