The Sabbione Dam, which comprises the Morasco hydroelectric plant, with a capacity of 26 million m3 forms the largest artificial reservoir in the Ossola and the Piemonte regions, and second largest in the Alpine area after the Place Moulin Dam in the Aosta Valley. This historical video shows the construction site at Morasco (Val Formazza); the main building activities started in 1949 and were completed in 1953. The tender for the construction of the Sabbione Dam was assigned to the Impresa Umberto Girola (the company is today part of the Salini Impregilo’s history). The project, like others in the same area, served to regulate annual energy production from the Toce plant, with a reservoir at the highest altitude in the river basin. The main work consists of a concrete hollow gravity dam, 64 m high and 279 m wide, located at the base of the Sabbione glacier, which will remain partially submerged. Its construction required 140,000 m3 of concrete and 1,200 workers. Employer: Gruppo Edison Contractor: Impresa Umberto Girola
