This is an 'inspiration' video for anyone designing a chicken coop, or anyone curious about all the neat features they can have. We very carefully researched and considered a lot of things that we would want and need and that our chickens would want and need, and we hope you enjoy seeing the end result! The design was mainly inspired by a version from Carolina Coops, with modifications for our climate and preferences. A lot of the techy features came from my husband's love of gadgets and automation. When it's finished, that panel of plywood won't be there - but there are so many projects on the go, that may not be for another 2 years! So we had to post the video now, even with the plywood. As we say, it will eventually be a set of doors. We've carefully considered space, convenience, shelter and comfort for our chickens. The laying boxes are large enough for them to sit comfortably, but small enough to feel private. The laying section is also elevated within the coop, so that the chickens feel safe to lay their eggs - but the roosting bars are higher, so they feel even safer sleeping there at night (instead of in the boxes!). The roosting bars are the right size to keep their feet healthy, round so that poop falls off of them (i.e. they aren't standing in their poop while they sleep!), and wrapped with twine for comfort and grip. The run is large enough for them all to have their space, and they can easily shelter from sun or rain without needing to go into the coop. There's also space to add hanging treats, which we will likely add around the same time as we finish the doors. Other touches we have considered and still may use are mini flower boxes under the windows, brackets for hanging baskets, a chicken swing (my husband has heard chickens don't actually like these) and a little sign with a cute name for the coop, like "The Cluckery". Anything I would change? Maybe an awning over the laying box would be nice, for me, so I don't sometimes get pelted with the elements when I'm checking for eggs. We considered a feeding system that we could load from outside, and that might hold more feed - but there was little to gain by doing that, other than perhaps some design accolades. It's very convenient to fill the large food container that we have, and it's easy for me to add fermented food to it as well. A system that connects to the outside would introduce another weak point where a predator might be able to break in. And besides, I made a PVC intricate feeding system for our first coop, and found it clogged easily. And if YOU want to build an awesome chicken coop, but maybe start with some plans, check out the fantastic and varied options at EasyCoops! https://easycoops.com/ref/71/ These designs are beautiful, there's something for every space with easy-to-follow directions. Honestly, I admire these beautiful designs so much, and I love that they're making urban (and rural!) chicken keeping so much easier to attain. FYI, I do get a small commission if you buy a plan through the link above. #chicken #chickencoop #coop #urbanhomesteading #urbanhomestead #urbanfarming #eggs #backyardfarming #backyardchickens
