US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting those who burn the American flag. According to the White House, the Trump administration will act to “restore respect and sanctity” for the American flag and “prosecute those who incite violence or otherwise violate our laws while desecrating this symbol of our country, to the fullest extent permissible under any available authority”. The executive order charges the Department of Justice of investigating instances of flag burning and, where there’s evidence of criminal activity, where prosecution wouldn’t fall afoul of the First Amendment, to prosecute the individuals responsible.
