Learn more about Low-Volume Rapid Thermoforming With 3D Printed Molds: https://bit.ly/3QiNolP Vacuum forming is a type of thermoforming manufacturing method used to shape plastic materials to create anything from consumer packaging to automotive components. During the vacuum forming process, a sheet of plastic is heated and then pulled around a single mold using suction. Vacuum forming is used for a wide range of manufacturing applications, ranging from small custom parts produced on desktop devices to large parts manufactured on automated industrial machinery. It is the simplest type of plastic thermoforming, that uses one mold and vacuum pressure to obtain the desired part geometry. It is ideal for parts that only need to be precisely formed on one side, such as contoured packaging for food or electronics. There are two basic types of molds—male or positive (which are convex) and female or negative, which are concave. With male molds, the sheet of plastic is placed over the mold to contour the inside dimensions of the plastic part. With female molds, the thermoplastic sheet is placed inside the mold to form the outer dimensions of the part precisely. For the process of vacuum forming you will need a mold or tool that will create the shape of the final part, a sheet of plastic, a heat source, and the source of vacuum. The sheet of plastic is heated and brought down onto the mold or tool. A vacuum is applied and the part is cooled before being removed from the mold. 3D printing is a perfect way to create vacuum forming molds and tooling, even with fine features like text or surface texture, as they are simple to add to a CAD file for printing. Formlabs high-temp resin can be also used vacuum forming materials like PETG and ABS. On the Form 3 support structures are used to support the part during the 3D printing process, which is best to keep off the critical surfaces to reduce the amount of 3D printing post-processing required. After sending the print job to the Form 3 and waiting a few hours, the 3D printed mold is finished printing. After a quick wash and cure process, the mold is ready for vacuum forming. You can work with these 3D printed parts the same way you would work with a traditionally fabricated tool - load the tool into the vacuum forming machine work area, heat the plastic sheet until it softens, draw it down onto the part and apply vacuum. Once the plastic is cooled enough, we can remove our vacuum formed part from the tool. It should be easy to trim with a sharp knife, or a machine tool like a router or a mill.
