When his jealous wife, Hera, killed Lamia's children, Lamia was driven mad and transformed into a child-devouring demon. She is often depicted as a monstrous creature with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a serpent. Lamia's story was used as a bogeyman figure in ancient Greece to frighten children into good behavior. ''Life of Apollonius of Tyana'' books also described her as a fiend who, in the form of a beautiful woman, seduced young men in order to devour them.
