First time ever on an automatic motorcycle… what could go wrong?😑 In this extended ride I throw a leg over the 2025 Honda Africa Twin DCT and try to wrap my firefighter brain around a bike with no clutch lever and no foot shifter. Here’s what I dig into: Tech overload: The Africa Twin’s dash is full of abbreviations, acronyms, and layered menus. Between the buttons on the bars and the screen layouts, I honestly felt more like a computer programmer than a rider until I sat and decoded everything. DCT learning curve: At first the transmission behaved pretty erratically, especially on dirt. It loved to be in a much higher gear than I’d normally choose, which made slow off-road stuff feel sketchy. Off-road modes & manual control: Once I finally figured out how to get it into the proper off-road mode and start manually overriding shifts, it became more predictable—but it still didn’t pick the gears I would have chosen myself. Size & confidence: The bike feels solid and very Honda, but it’s still a big adventure bike. I would not want to be wrestling this thing in deep mud, rocks, or tight technical sections—especially when I’m not 100% sure what the transmission is about to do. Future of auto bikes: With more manufacturers playing with automatic and semi-auto transmissions, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes. I like the concept, but I’m not sold on this platform unless I found one super cheap… and even then I’d have to think about it.
