The first talks on natural gas trade between Turkiye and Turkmenistan began in 1998. The meetings held in March 2024 between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov in Antalya accelerated this process. Following Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar's visit to Turkmenistan in July 2024, the necessary technical and legal infrastructure work was completed. After 27 years of ongoing natural gas talks, a concrete agreement has been reached between Turkiye and Turkmenistan. This agreement, signed between BOTAŞ and Türkmengaz, aims to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries and increase Turkiye's natural gas supply security. Additionally, the construction of a Caspian-crossing natural gas pipeline is also planned in the long term. As part of the agreement, the natural gas flow from Turkmenistan to Turkiye is planned to start on March 1, 2025. The agreement foresees an annual gas supply of approximately 2 billion cubic meters. The gas is planned to be transported to Turkiye through the existing natural gas network in Iran. This development will increase the diversification of Turkiye's energy supply and strengthen regional energy cooperation. GZT Special Content Editor Sinan Bakioğlu and Professor Dr. Çağla Gül Yesevi, Head of the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Kültür University, evaluated the natural gas agreement signed between Turkiye and Turkmenistan.
