This is a data-driven ranking of the most pristine quads in womens figure skating for the 22/23 season. Whereas most of the videos on this channel are focused on determining the “best” jumps or jumpers, the focus here is on determining the “most pristine” jumps. Why is this and what’s the difference? Ranking the best quads would necessitate using a methodology similar to the one used for our “top quad jumpers” videos, which factors in not only jump quality, but also jump difficulty. While this approach is perfectly sensible, the results here would be a somewhat repetitive video packed almost entirely with 4Lzs and 4Fs. As such, it was decided it would be more interesting to momentarily ignore difficulty, and instead focus on the most flawlessly executed quads, regardless of quad type and difficulty. With this in mind, the basis for this ranking is PoM (“Percentage of Max”), a metric calculated by dividing the number of points a skater received for a jump by the maximum number of points they could have received. One advantage of PoM is that it factors in not only GOE, but also the base value impact of any calls that a jump received. While not relevant to this particular analysis, PoM also makes it easier to compare jumps across different seasons and scale of values. Some further explanation of PoM... • To use a 4F to illustrate, for the 22/23 season, the maximum score for a 4F, ignoring bonuses, was 11.00. So, as a hypothetical example, a 4F with a score of 9.00 would have a PoM of 9.00 / 11.00 = 81.8%. • When calculating PoM for a quad jumped as part of a combination or sequence, the base value impact of the non-quad part of the jump pass is excluded from both the numerator and denominator. (It wouldn’t be excluded if you were calculating PoM for the entire jump pass, however.) For example, for a 4Lz+2T, the 1.30 point impact of the 2T would be excluded. Also, it is a rare occurrence, but if a jump pass’s GOE was based on the non-quad part of the jump pass, it would be recalculated to be based on the quad. • Second-half bonuses are factored into the calculation of PoM. However, other bonuses, such as those sometimes seen in certain novice and domestic competitions, are generally excluded. Repetition penalties and fall deductions are also excluded from the calculation of PoM. The analysis underlying this ranking takes into account all competitions covered by SkatingScores, the invaluable and fairly comprehensive database of international and domestic competition results. However, SkatingScores is missing some significant Russian domestic events, especially at the novice level. In light of this, the following events have also been included in this analysis... All-Russian Competitions taking place in Moscow and St. Petersburg Russian Novice Nationals Moscow Novice Championships St. Petersburg Championships Winter Spartakiad, Prizes of Santa Claus Moscow Open Championships, City Championships, Cup, Sports Cup It is estimated that this analysis, in total, has taken into account over 95% of the ultra-cs that have been attempted in competition this season, with those attempts missing mainly being from minor domestic events in Russia, in particular minor events outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as some minor domestic events in Japan and the United States. Lastly, it should be noted that in the case of any skater who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, their results are invalidated for purposes of this analysis starting from the season they tested positive, and ending at the point that they were cleared to compete again by the relevant international bodies.
