We remember Melanie Safka , a remarkable artist born in Astoria, New York on February 3, 1947. Her journey in music began in the coffee houses and folk clubs of Greenwich Village, fueled by diverse influences ranging from Edith Piaf to her jazz singer mother Polly. Melanie's unique voice and unconventional approach captivated audiences from the start. Her career took flight after meeting Peter Schekeryk, her future manager, producer, and husband, in 1967. She made an indelible mark with her debut at Woodstock in 1969, leading to her first US hit, “Candles in The Rain.” Melanie's international appeal was undeniable, with loyal fans in France, the Netherlands, Germany, and beyond. A prolific songwriter, Melanie's works were covered by over 200 artists, including Nina Simone and Kanye West. Her star continued to rise with performances at major festivals and recognition as the biggest selling female artist in the US in 1971. Defying stereotypes, she founded her own label, Neighborhood Records, creating hits like “Brand New Key” and powerful albums that spoke her truth. A follower of Meher Baba and an advocate for world peace and nature, Melanie's life was more than her music. Her memoir "Lake Days" reflects her love for nature and a free-spirited childhood. She remained a fiercely independent artist, leaving a legacy of timeless music and inspiring individuality. We celebrate Melanie, a true icon whose voice and spirit continue to resonate across generations. Her music and message of peace and empowerment will forever be cherished.
