Cyborgs (or at least the term) are ubiquitous. Cyborgs play main roles in Hollywood movies, cyber attacks threaten companies, and cybathlets compete in games such as paralympic or cybathlons. The typical anxiety scenario is widespread, that computers are becoming so powerful and ‘intelligent’ that they can no longer be controlled by humans. In his talk, Robert takes a light-hearted approach and challenges stereotypes and conspiracy theories to explain why people are afraid of cyborgs. He highlights the reality to show that we are still very far from the described dangers and that we need not fear computer performance or the rationalization of jobs and actually, the great possibilities and opportunities overtake any theoretical dangers. Robert founded the world’s first Cybathlon, an Olympic-style competition that facilitates a conversation between academia, industry, technology developers, and people with disabilities. The Cybathlon accelerates the development of assistive technologies around the world. Robert is also a full professor of sensory-motor systems and head of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich and professor of medicine at the University Hospital Balgrist. His research focuses on rehabilitation robotics, virtual reality and human motor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
