Gall Bladder Stones in Children and Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy What are Gallstones in children? Gallstones are small, solid stone-like objects. They form due to solid deposits of the digestive fluid in the gallbladder. The liquid/fluid is called bile. It helps the body in digesting fats. Gallstones.Gall bladder is a small organ present just below the liver. Among children, almost 2% of them are diagnosed with gallstones. Gallstones are also called with the name of cholelithiasis. Hence, these gallstones can sometimes become very complicated because when they are inflamed or move into a duct or a passageway, they create a blockage. Thus, if this happens, a child may have pain in the upper side of the stomach, nausea, vomiting, jaundice and fever. Its treatment is necessary because it may cause pancreatitis. What are the reasons for gallstones in children? Gallstone is a rare disease in children. However, it might get complicated by causing: cholecystitis, cholangitis, and gallstone pancreatitis. It happens due to obstruction of the biliary duct or infection. The main reason for gallstone formation is too much cholesterol in the bile. More consumption of fast food and fried items in daily routine. And also gallbladder doesn’t empty. Thus, the body needs bile for proper digestion, and if the passage is blocked, it causes a problem in digestion and starts the formation of gallstones. What is the treatment of gallstones in children? The only treatment for gallstones is laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: It is a minimally invasive surgery to remove the gallbladder. This technique is helpful when children have gallstones in their gallbladder, causing inflammation, pain or infection. Thus, the surgery involves a few small incisions on the right side of the abdomen (belly). One main incision is made to insert a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on its end. Hence, the gallbladder then gets removed through another small incision. Therefore, laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is less invasive than open Cholecystectomy. So, when a child is brought for surgery, parents are advised to keep fasting at least 6 hours before the surgery. Why is a biopsy of the gallbladder necessary? After the gallbladder removal, a biopsy is necessary to observe the composition of the stones. Moreover, another reason for biopsy is to find if any abnormality is present in the gallbladder. If any abnormal condition is observed, its treatment is done accordingly. __________________ Follow us on Social Media Platforms FACEBOOK @DrMohsinPediatricSurgeon / drmohsinpediatricsurgeon INSTAGRAM @DrMohsinPediatricSurgeon / drmohsinpaediatricsurgeon __________________ CONTACT US 0333 5388203 Website: https://drmohsin.alsapakistan.com Email: [email protected] #DrMohsin #AlsaPakistan #gallbladdersurgery
