Hello friends welcome to my channel, My name is Akash Prajapati, Today's topic is Osmotic Fragility Blood Test. What is an osmotic fragility/red blood cell (RBC) fragility test? The osmotic fragility test, also known as the RBC fragility test, is used to determine whether red blood cells will undergo hemolysis (rupture) when exposed to different concentrations of saline solution. RBCs have a membrane surrounding them that allows water to pass into the cell and keeps other solutes (salt in this case) out. This process is called osmosis. When red blood cells are placed in a very dilute solution, they absorb too much water, causing them to swell and burst. This is the principle of the osmotic fragility test. In people who have had hemolysis in their blood vessels (intravascular hemolysis), the osmotic fragility test is used to determine whether the red blood cells have low or high fragility. High fragility means that the RBCs have a reduced tolerance to dilute salt solutions while low fragility means that the RBCs have a high tolerance to dilute salt solutions. Why is the osmotic fragility/RBC fragility test performed? Doctors recommend this test to diagnose two genetic disorders in people with intravascular hemolysis: Hereditary spherocytosis: A disorder in which the RBCs change their shape to a round shape, leading to increased osmotic fragility. Thalassemia: A disorder in which the RBCs become thin and flat, leading to decreased osmotic fragility. Your doctor may order this test if you have the following symptoms of spherocytosis: • Anemia • Yellowing of the skin • Rapid heartbeat • Fatigue • Shortness of breath • Growth problems • Lack of folate because the body uses more of it to replace damaged blood vessels. • Enlarged spleen because it is important in breaking down and filtering RBCs • Aplastic crisis where too few red blood cells are made • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) • Gallstones Your doctor may recommend this test if you have the following symptoms of thalassemia: • Anemia • Fatigue • Shortness of breath • Fluttering, fast or irregular heartbeat • Jaundice • Yellow skin • Gallstones and swollen gallbladder • Reduced growth during childhood • Osteoporosis (weak bones) • Abnormal bone growth, such as large cheekbones and bone growth under the forehead • Decreased fertility Peripheral Blood Smear Test in hindi - • PBS Test in hindi | Peripheral Blood Smear...
