Welcome to Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas. One of the more frequented ports of call for Caribbean cruises, Nassau offers a wealth of options for historical tours, robust shopping, or lazy beach days. Best of all, most of these can be done without ever booking (and paying for) a formal shore excursion. We'll be making dock with the Royal Caribbean International's Utopia of the Seas, the newest ship added to their Oasis-class fleet. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the terminal, where we'll stroll through the pastel shops and bars. This is a perfect one-stop-shop for those less adventurous or with limited mobility. Past here, however, the real journey begins as we'll be walking to most of the locales advertised for city tours. Yes! These are all within walking distance! Outside the port is Downtown Nassau, where you'll have plenty more shopping and dining options, but most alluring is the world-famous Straw Market. This indoor venue is a maze of clothing, crafts, hats, souvenirs, and more. None of it has a set price. After we elude the vendors hawking wares, we'll make our way to Pompey Square for some beachside views, followed by a visit to the government buildings in Parliament Square. Cutting through there, it's about a 10-15 minute hike to the gorgeous waterfall and Queen's Staircase, followed by the historic Fort Fincastle and a stroll back to port.
