As your baby gets older, his/her nap schedule is going to change and you're going to shift from having two naps a day to just one long afternoon nap each day. It's important to know when your baby is going to be ready for this transition. Many parents want to make this nap transition around 12 months old, but 83% of babies are NOT ready for just 1 nap at 12 months old. The average age range for this transition is between 14-16 months old. Some other signs of being ready for this transition include early morning wake-ups, nap refusals, taking shorter naps in general, bedtime struggles, and of course, more middle of the night wake-ups. Here's what you should do to make this transition: 1. Push the morning nap to 11am and let your baby sleep for UP TO 3 hours. 2. Increase this nap time by 15 minutes every few days. So 11am will become 11:15am. 3. Make sure the room is the perfect sleep environment. PITCH BLACK and use white noise. 4. ONLY if this nap is less than 1.5hrs, then offer a catnap around 3pm. 5. Once nap is pushed to 12/1pm, you should not be offering the catnap anymore. 6. If your child had a SHORT nap day and NO catnap, do bedtime at 6pm. 7. If you had a 2 nap day, bedtime might be closer to 8pm. THIS IS A LONG TRANSITION.
