More than 400 years since over 12 million men and women were forcibly removed from their native land in Africa along treacherous routes and delivered as slaves in the Americas and Europe, the impact of that historic forced migration continues to shape the continent and redefine the socio-cultural, economic and political development of the African people. Robbing African countries of the much-needed labour force by taking men and women at their prime and productive age not only affected the economic activities then but has been attributed to the poverty experienced in the continent over the years. Welcome to today’s video, where we will be discussing the impact of slavery on African cultures and economies, a stain that remains on the continent, even after the abolition of the inhuman practice. Slavery is undoubtedly one of the most brutal practices in human history, and its devastating effects on African societies cannot be overstated. For centuries, European powers pillaged and plundered Africa for slaves, which had an irrevocable impact on the continent's economic progress. The African continent was bled of its human resources via all possible routes. Across the Sahara, through the Red Sea, from the Indian Ocean ports and across the Atlantic. At least ten centuries of slavery for the benefit of the Muslim countries (from the ninth to the nineteenth). Then more than four centuries (from the end of the fifteenth to the nineteenth) of a regular slave trade to build the Americas and the prosperity of the Christian states of Europe. The figures, even where hotly disputed, make your head spin.
