At least 200 human rights defenders and journalists have been killed in the Philippines in recent years, making it one of the most dangerous places in Asia for those who stand up for dignity and justice. Environmental defenders are particularly at risk. At the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders joined civil society representatives from the Philippines for a powerful discussion on how the international community can better support and protect those on the frontlines. Speakers: • Mary Lawlor (UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders) • Rachel Tahay (Purple Action for Indigenous Women’s Rights – LILAK) • Vincent Oville (Philippine Human Rights Information Centre – PhilRights) • Samantha David (Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates – PAHRA) Moderation by Astrud Beringer (Aktionsbündnis Menschenrechte Philippinen – AMP) Organized by Franciscans International • Aktionsbündnis Menschenrechte Philippinen (AMP) • Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines (CMSP) • Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND) • Fastenaktion • Forum-Asia • Human Rights Watch (HRW) • In Defense of Human Rights and Dignity Movement (iDefend) • International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) • Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT/FIDH) • Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) • Philippine Human Rights Information Centre (PhilRights) • Purple Action for Indigenous Women’s Rights (LILAK) • World Council of Churches (WCC)
