On Sunday, March 8th, International Women’s Day will be celebrated in fun and inspiring way as the Women-Led Jazz Symposium 5.0 will take place at the Franco Manitoban Cultural Centre. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., this dynamic gathering brings together students, educators, performers, composers, and jazz enthusiasts for an afternoon designed to inspire, educate, and empower participants of all ages and backgrounds. The symposium features an exceptional lineup of presenters and sessions, including a virtual keynote by internationally acclaimed trumpet player , composer, producer, and bandleader Rachel Therrien. Participants can also take part in interactive breakout sessions titled “You Can Do It!”—hands-on instrumental and vocal creativity workshops—along with a women-in-jazz “her”story presentation, and a session on intersectional feminism in music. Closing remarks will come from Monica Jones of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. Jones will speak about her approach to composing this year’s joint Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra and Manitoba Band Association commission for the Young Women in Jazz ensemble. The jam-packed celebration continues in the evening at 7:30 p.m. with a special Women’s Day tribute to Joni Mitchell, featuring vocalists Heitha Forsyth and Andrina Turenne. The program will highlight favorite W2JO selections, new commissions from members of BC’s Sister Jazz Orchestra, the Calgary Women’s Jazz Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Women’s Jazz Orchestra, along with works by leading women composers of today. This promises to be a totally inspiring and exhilarating symposium. And joining me here in the Classic 107 Studio to Talk about the Women-Led Jazz Symposium 5.0, I am joined by Saxophonist and composer Monica Jones and Alexis Silver, who is the leader of the W2JO Big Band
