How can I get an accurate reading? First of all, you don't really need to have a super-accurate temperature if they're over three months old. If they are under three months, I still recommend the rectal thermometer. If your child is over three months, you can skip the rectal thermometer, as most kids (and parents) aren't fans. I like ear thermometers because they are easier. Oral thermometers are okay, too. It doesn't really matter what type of thermometer you use, as long as you are getting a basic idea of the temperature. If your child does have a fever, we recommend taking their temperature at least once a day so you can report to your pediatrician about how high and how long the fever has been. A lot of times parents will come to the office saying their child has a fever, but when we take their temperature they're really fine. It's hard to judge a fever by how hot your child feels to the touch. We do recommend cooling measures like lukewarm baths but avoid very cold baths since they can cause the child to shiver, driving the fever up. If the child does have a fever make sure they are dressed in the minimum amount of clothing to keep them cool and comfortable.
