The Butcher of Warsaw - Oskar Dirlewanger Oskar Dirlewanger passed away in June 1945 at the notorious All Thousand Detention Center. It is believed that he met a violent end, likely beaten to death by his Polish guards. Even among the most brutal Nazis, he was despised for leading a murderous group of degenerates, and his actions throughout his life were filled with unspeakable horrors. Born on September 26, 1895, not much is known about his early life. The most relevant part of his background is his military career during World War I. At just 18 years old, he joined the army as a private and rose to the rank of lieutenant, earning the Iron Cross both first and second class for his conduct. After the war, he led 600 men of his company from Romania to Germany to avoid being interned as prisoners of war due to the fear of communist uprisings.
